MONTROSE - For the second year in a row, Delta Montrose Electric Association is not planning to increase its rates.

DMEA’s board of directors recently approved the cooperative’s budget for 2010. The budget did not include an increase, according to a news release.

“We hope that our holding the line on rates will help our member-owners during tough economic times,” DMEA General Manager Dan McClendon said. “We’ll continue in 2010 to work to help our members save energy and money and we hope to play a role in repowering our local economy.”

The cost of power from DMEA’s wholesale provider, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, accounts for about 70 percent of DMEA’s overall operating expenses. The decision for Tri-State not to increase its rates was a major factor in DMEA’s decision not to increase theirs, McClendon said.

“We commend their work to control costs while enhancing their rebate programs for energy efficient appliances, lights and other conservation measures and hope they’ll expand such efforts,” he said.

The decision not to increase rates has been an ongoing effort. In late 2008, DMEA’s board asked staff to do everything possible to no pass through a $1.8 million increase in their wholesale cost of power from Tri-State.

Overall, energy prices have moderated in part because of global economic conditions that factor into our local cost of energy, McClendon said.

The price of petroleum, gasoline, natural gas, coal and other energy sources have come down as compared to the previous year.

“We believe that as the economy recovers, energy costs will start to climb,” he said. “Therefore, DMEA will continue to emphasize the importance of energy efficiency, conservation, demand-side management and any way we can find to help our member-owners save energy and money.”
