MONTROSE - Fire district board member Jim Haugsness’ bid to freeze a previously approved — and controversial — cost-of -living wage increase for firefighters failed as a matter of procedure Thursday night.

On a narrow margin, however, the Montrose Fire Protection District Board of Directors voted 3-2 to hold 2011’s salaries level without the cost-of-living adjustment until enough work sessions have been held to hash out 2011’s budgetary issues.

In October, Haugsness was the lone dissenter among board members who approved the 3-percent raise within the 2010 budget. Paul McDermott and Peter Cassidy voted for the increase. Remaining board members Greg Bollig and Steve Ellis were absent.

Bollig said Thursday that he had tried to delay the last meeting and was told the budget discussion would be postponed.
