DENVER — Other than an opening kickoff return for a score, Delta, a first-timer in the 3A playoffs since 1999, affirmed a tough victory Saturday, upsetting the D’Evelyn Jaguars 14-6.

D’Evelyn opened the game by taking the Panthers’ kickoff in for a touchdown. Delta blocked the point-after attempt.

Delta’s defense answered on the next series when D’Evelyn fumbled a pitch out and the ball bounced into the hands of Chad Cromwell who returned the mistake five yards for a tying touchdown. Kicker Ethan Kraii booted the extra point and Delta led, 7-6.

Before the first half ended, Delta’s Austin Watson connected with Robert Simpson on a play-action pass which resulted in the Panthers’ second touchdown. Kraii kicked the extra point and Delta led 14-6 at halftime.

In the closing minutes of the game, with D’Evelyn driving, Delta’;s Nolan Britton picked off an errant pass, sealing the win for Delta. D’Evelyn had seven turnovers, including five interceptions.

Delta will host Pueblo Central at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in the quarter-finals of 3A play.
