MONTROSE - To the Colorado State Patrol, it was a traffic infraction.

To Adrian Geana, though, his ticket for running a stop sign during the Olathe Corn Festival was “armed robbery,” apparently because the trooper had a firearm and because fines are assessed on traffic citations.

His argument during his bench trial Wednesday did little more than exasperate County Judge John Mitchel. The judge’s interpretation of his conduct during proceedings - plus recordings Mitchel said were made without the court’s permission - saw him jailed for contempt of court.

Despite repeated warnings throughout the trial, Geana broke into a smattering of applause as Mitchel prepared to render a guilty verdict on the traffic charge, and later announced he was “happy as hell” before being led away to serve his sentence for contempt.

Geana has since reportedly gone on a hunger strike at the jail to protest recent approval of the Pinon Ridge Uranium Mill special use permit.

His wife said Thursday that Geana is “not a caricature or an idiot,” but that he was simply passionate about his beliefs. (See related story.)
