Randy Havens, U. of Wyoming booster, Montrose Community Foundation board member, near-scratch golfer, sometime banker and Vietnam veteran, sent along a note which I was going to include in Notebook yesterday. We decided, however, to run “thank you” letters from Montrose High School students instead.

A Veteran

A veteran is someone who, at some point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of American, for an amount of “up to, and including his or her life.”

A good illustration of what a compassionate community Montrose can be is what happened last weekend.

Two distinctly different fundraisers: one for the police families involved in the July shooting at the Montrose Elks Club: $13,000. Another, the annual San Juan Healthcare Foundation gala to benefit ongoing local medical care, $42,000.

Way to go, Montrose! A City on the Rise.

Daily Press tidings--.

• I’ve hired a new managing editor, Billie Stanton. It’s a bit of history making, in fact. She will be the first female managing editor of the Daily Press in its 127 years of publishing local news. She will start later this month, or early December.

Billie is an award-winning journalist and a veteran editor. For the past five years, until the Tucson Citizen ceased publishing in May, she was the Citizen’s opinion editor. She spent 14 years at the Denver Post as its Sunday editor, as its regional editor, and as its assistant city editor. Before that, she was the night editor for the Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph. She made her bones working her way up from community newspapers like the Daily Press to the metros like the Post and Citizen. Along the way, she did some extraordinary things. She’s the daughter of a retired Air Force “lifer,” as she puts it, and lived abroad while growing up. Weary of the metro traffic and grind of urban life, she and her daughter, Addie, will be relocating here. Addie will be a freshman at Montrose High School. They are a delight. One constant during the interviewing process which began in late September: Billie knows the West Slope from her years on the Front Range, has visited here often and had a genuine desire to return to the state and this area. The Press is fortunate to attract someone of her skills, leadership experiences and exuberance. More on this after she arrives.

• Matt Lindberg has rejoined the Daily Press. He will cover education, general assignment reporting and will be doing some page design as well. He came here fresh from the U. of Kansas School of Journalism.

• The Daily Press will be doing a live, streaming video cast of the Montrose High School /Standley Lake/Westminster football playoff game Saturday at 1 p.m. at MHS’ community stadium. Go to our Web site: www.montrosepress.com for details. We’ll also be covering the defending state 3A champion Olathe Pirates as they host Salida. (Olathe has a 24 game winning streak, the longest in Colorado. Wow!) We’ll also have a report from the Delta/D’Evelyn/Denver game as well.
