MONTROSE  — Though still higher than the state’s average, Montrose County’s unemployment rate has dropped to the lowest percentage seen all year.

September figures show that Montrose County’s unemployment rate was at 6.9 percent, with only 1,442 people unemployed for that month.

That rate was still higher than the state’s 6.7 percent unemployment rate, but fairs well among surrounding counties.

" neighbor to the left has not worked since february- construction, neighbor on right got laid off in march sold his house and moved- real estate, my husband got laid off in june- petroleum. at last count there were 13 houses for sale on our block (that isn't even going all the way down the end of our street!) my two sons and my father have all been laid off or hours cut down to practically nothing. my husband has unemployment and i had a small settlement for us to live off until things are better, others are not as fortunate. " These figures are for people filing for unemployment "benefits". Most the people around here are too proud to stand in line for a hand out, or are self employed and not eligible. This include contractors, real estate agents, and most trades. Just from looking around I would say it's closer to 13/15 percent. "

" " Too bad the County Commissioners have anit-business mentalities" ... thats a great observation considering the commissioners are giving away $100k of our money to a group(MEDC) whos only interest is perpetuating the same revolving doors of self interest by skimming public monies into their own pockets. the hypocrisy of Montrose lies in the fact that the city and county aspire to be Telluride north. they think they can eat caviar on peantbutter wages, instead of real improvements they indulge themselves in political shell games at taxpayer expense. " I'm sorry I have to disagree with these figures. I'm currently job hunting. You have 11 ads today! Know how many resumes I've been able to send out in the last 2 weeks. ZERO! This is with wide base of experience that could be applied to many different things and spending over an hour per day checking all the sites. Frustrating to say the least. "

" Just look around town and you can see the truth. Go to Christ's Kitchen, hang out at any Pay Day Loan store, look at the empty stores on Main Street, ask any non-profit how hard it is to get donations, look at the empty shelves at the food bank, look at the foreclosures and tax liens, and notice how small this newspaper has become. All signs of a difficult economy and for now no end in sight. "

" I placed a help wanted ad on Craigslist.org and we got over 120 applications. What does that say about our unemployment rate? I don't believe the article's numbers. "

" Does this data count for all of the self-employed contractors with no work, or all of the real estate agents? "

Former Employee wrote on Oct 31, 2009 10:29 AM:

" The people who compile and report these numbers obviously have jobs, and have no idea how to find the real numbers, because they don't have contact with those that are no longer collecting unemployment, were never eligible, left to find employment elsewhere, or don't report their income, or lack thereof. These numbers are just as suspect as the national reporting. "

" Using these figures, that means there are 21,000 job holding citizens in montrose. I think that's a little high. "

" Look around, For sale signs, for Lease signs, only 22 ads under help wanted. Slave labor, though court ordered public service, low wages. Quote of the Day (Hard to Believe). Only 1,442 out of work. Right..... "

" This is good news. I think people just left as opposed to hanging around waiting for things to change. "

not convinced wrote on Oct 30, 2009 7:02 AM:

" Yeah, don't think so. Somebody's cooking the numbers here. Maybe that's the number of new applicants, or maybe that's the number of people currently drawing unemployment, but it doesn't count those who no longer draw unemployment and still haven't found employment. I'm sure the number is closer to 15% unemployed. Maybe the county ought to hire a new position to check into this. Then it would be only 14.999%. But wait, the county would just hire this person from the Denver area, so all it would do is spend more tax money the unemployed can't afford to pay. "
