ASPEN “ “Running at 9,000 feet isn’t easy,” so said Montrose High School cross country coach Brian Simpson after his Lady Indians cross country team won the regional championship here Saturday for the first time in 24 years. “I’m proud of all my athletes and how they ran.” The Lady Indians are headed to the state cross-county meet in Fort Collins Oct. 31. Sutton Frey placed eighth in the mens division and will also compete.

Coach Simpson noted how the womens team ran as a pack and stayed together. At the one mile mark, MHS was two points behind Moffat County. At the two mile mark, the Lady Indians had forged and ahead and stayed in front for the one-point victory. Montrose tallied 41 points to Moffat’s 42, with Summit County finishing third with 81. In the mens bracket, Moffatt County won with 61 points with Battle Mountain the runner up with 73. Eleven schools competed with 74 men and 67 women running. Simpson said eligibility and injury problems kept the MHS mens team from making the top four and earning a team spot at state.
