The Daily Press published one last Sunday, a 420-pounder grown up on Dave Wood Road. A big ‘un, for sure, unless you compare it to the 1,658 pounder that won the top prize at the Half Moon Bay, Calif., World Champion Pumpkin Weigh Off. The world record is 1,725 pounds, a big one that won a few weeks ago in a similar competition sponsored by Safeway in Ohio. First prize in the “Super Bowl of competitive pumpkin weigh-offs” – in Half Moon Bay, Calif. — was $9,948, which will likely pay for some fuel for Don Young, the winner, who drove the specimen all the way from Des Moines.
Half Moon Bay, one of the nicest places I’ve ever visited, hosts annually an arts festival to coincide with its pumpkin festival. Sort of like that “corn festival” we hear about up the road annually, except without all the California coastal fog.

“Can you read this?” the optician asked.
“Read it?” he replied, “Heck, I know the guy.”
