In the greatest economic slump since the Great Depression, we see the dollar in a steady decline, trillion dollars plus deficits, a national debt continuing to spiral out of control, and this country being further indebted to foreign governments. Now, the BOCC has voted to increase the annual contribution of taxpayer dollars to MEDC by 50 fold, to $100,000. Given the state of the economy, the fact that businesses are downsizing instead of expanding, and, in view of citizen concerns over MEDC’s convoluted relationship with JetAway Aviation, it does not seem fiscally prudent to budget public money in such a manner. On the bright side, it was refreshing to see Jim Haugsness exercise true fiscal responsibility as a board member of the Montrose Fire Protection District, by voting against a $77,000 increase to the budget for pay raises. Mr. Haugsness clearly understands his fiduciary duty to the district to use monies wisely, especially in these uncertain times. All public officials should be as fiscally responsible.
